For the execution of a metal cut (Metallschnitt), the mould is first engraved with a sharp instrument in a metal plate (lead, copper, brass). The plate can then be inked and a paper can be pressed to it. The dotted print (Schröttblat) also needs an engraved metal plate ,but there is additional decoration applied by punches with different patterns (crosses, french lilies,...). The dotted print is based on a metal-engraved pattern that is achieved by obtaining a relief with a hammer stroke and punching with a variety of motifs.
Sometimes there was made a counterprint from the engraved mould in a different material (for example plaster) to gain more prints of the same image.
